MotoGP Live in Shoreditch
By Ross Sharp - 11 Dec 18
In 2014 a few of the original BSMC crew were guests on the then relatively new MotoGP show produced by BT Sport, just down the road at Here East, in the Olympic Park, Stratford. As lifelong race fans this was quite a coup, and a chance to try and prove that we weren't a bunch of latte quaffing hipsters from the upper east side. Backed-up by a few props; Dutch's Ducati Paul Smart, his outgoing BMW R80 and the Spirit of the Seventies Barbour Triumph we championed the new wave custom scene and our plans for the future.
Even fuelled by the many post-show beers we'd never have imagined that just four years later we'd be hosting the BT Sport crew at our Shoreditch HQ for a season finalé live show. Seriously, pinch us - hard. Grand Prix racing elites Jorge Lorenzo, Bradley Smith, Sam Lowes and star of the future Rory Skinner were interviewed by Suzy Perry, Michael Laverty, Neil Hodgson, James Toseland, Gavin Emmett and Keith Huewen. We've had some stars through our doors but that's a name drop that'll take some beating.
As if that wasn't enough Ducati delivered Dovi's 2018 race winning Desmosedici GP and Triumph sent their new Moto 2 prototype as eye candy. Plus Marquez, Crutchlow, Rins and Lorenzo's Alpinestars airbag race suits were on display.
Sharing this special evening was a studio audience and restaurant packed full of guests, some lucky BSMC members and competition winners. The atmosphere reflected an incredible and slightly surreal experience. Five time world champ Jorge Lorenzo chilling in our lounge.... we need another pinch.
In fact, 9 World Championships and 3 British Championships wedged onto two sofas...... that raises the bar somewhat for future events here at the 'Shed.
And the audience wasn't shy of talent either, IOM TT heroes Jenny Tinmouth and Maria Costello rubbed shoulders with crowd while Cal Crutchlow and Colin Edwards Skyped in from overseas. And F1 ace Lance stroll was hanging around somewhere.
OK, enough of the name dropping, you get the idea - we were pretty pleased with ourselves. But props to the BT Sport crew, producing live TV is never easy, especially in our awkwardly shaped arches with trains rumbling overhead. It all went without a hitch and we hope to amp-up our MotoGP coverage in Arch 3 for 2019. Watch this space.
